With the international players list being made public, Goal brings forth a few important statistics on the same...
Just two months prior to the kick off of the inaugural Indian Super League (ISL), a brainchild of All India Football Federation's (AIFF) marketing and commercial partners IMG-Reliance, the organizers have released a list of 49 international players, apart from the marquee signings, and the gross estimates to have them aboard a specific club.
What is immediately discernable from a quick look at the list is the capping amongst players. The majority of them, barring three, have been assigned into fixed blocks with a pay scale of either Rupees 35 lakhs or the lower band of Rupees 23.5 lakhs. The upper band, features only three players viz. French duo Bernard Mendy and Gregory Arnolin, both on Rupees 48.63 lakhs for their services and Jose Miguel González Rey, better known as Josemi, on Rupees 42.55 lakhs.
Whilst no clear-cut method of evaluation is lucid, the likes of Premier League proven experience like Michael Chopra, formerly of Cardiff City, Sunderland and Newcastle United, alongside Bojan Djordic, an ex-recruit of Manchester United and Sheffield Wednesday have been set reasonable rates in the middle tier of 35 lakhs.
What’s also surprising is that out of the 49 players on the ISL list, the mid-tier (35 lakhs) bracket is the most populated with 34 players drafted into that range. 12 players, occupy the lower tier (23.5 lakhs).
The average age of the list is said to be around 27.95 years with 8 Frenchman, 4 Colombian, 5 Brazilian, 8 Czech Republicans, 2 Koreans, 9 Spaniards, 5 Portuguese alongside players from England, Canada, Greece, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Serbia and Argentina, with a representative each.
As per the list there are 17 defenders, 7 attacking midfielders, 10 midfielders (central defensive midfielders and wingers), 10 strikers and 5 goalkeepers. Clearly an impetuous on defenders is easily visible. What’s more is all three of the higher bracket players (over 42.4 lakhs) are all accomplished defenders.
Of all the players on the list, the majority of the midfielders are in the mid-tier slab of 35 lakhs, whilst the majority of defenders too occupy this slot. All the goal keepers are in the mid-tier slot. Whilst about 8 out of the ten strikers occupy the mid-tier plateau as well.
What will be interesting to see is the number of clubs vying to sign these players on apparent competitive rates.
