Chile-Australia: Quotes

Jorge Sampaoli, Chile coach
We started well and put Australia under a lot of pressure. We had a good understanding in attack, especially with Alexis Sanchez as the focal point, and we created several chances. After Australia scored we lost a little bit of momentum and we got frustrated. At the end of the match, the players were happy but determined to do better in the next game. We were not at our best. We didn’t play as well as we can – and with the calibre of our next two opponents, we will have to give a more complete performance. The prospect of playing Spain at the Maracana is electrifying.

Ange Postecoglou, Australia coach
Chile have world-class players and they started very strongly. Perhaps we gave them too much respect. We had a lot of players playing at their first World Cup and I think it took them a while to settle down, but after that they did extremely well to get back into the game. After that I felt that we took the game to Chile, particularly in the second half. Tim Cahill was outstanding for us– and in the air he is world-class. No defender wants to go up against him when a cross comes into the box. No one gave us a chance going into this game and going into this tournament, but Australians don’t give up and I felt we deserved the draw.

Alexis Sanchez, Chile forward and Budweiser Man of the Match
We suffered a bit, it's true, but this is a World Cup. Maybe we relaxed a bit too early, although we never gave up and kapt attacking. We gave a 100 per cent in hot weather, and the prize is a satisfying victory. I want to dedicate it to the people who came here to support us.-FIFA.COM
